As a photographer, this was a special event for me to help
organize. The photographs that I've taken are part of an on going series,
"Beacon and Beyond: Photographs From Around The Corner and Around The
World". While I've taken photographs in many places; Africa, the Middle
East, Europe and in different parts of the USA, it is the photographs done
close to home that stand out. Some of those are pictured here. My
grandfather bought me my first camera at age 10. I took the photo of him
sitting in the engine at the Harmon Shops at age 12. Mike Aquaviva was my
barber when I was a boy. His shop was on Main Street next to the Mt. Beacon
Hotel. Dave Knapp had a paint and hardware store on the West end of Maine
Street. Mr Dondero ran an ice cream shop and was also a barber in town.
Jasper Shupe was the President of the old Beacon Savings Bank. Christi
Iurato is now the manager of Sancturary on Main Street. Ron Sauers is a
builder in town and more. Beacon's Main Street and the historic renovation
of many buildings can be attributed to Ron Sauers.
Why take pictures? Maybe Lewis Hine said it best, "If I could
tell a story in words, I wouldn't lug around a camera".
