The
photo event, "The Spirit of Beacon: One Week of Photography" has been an
idea that I've thought about for a long time. I have been photographing
in Beacon for many years. The subjects have varied from landscape, to
historic buildings to people. Of all my photographs, those of people in
the community are most poignant and memorable. Many of those pictured
here have long since past on. Dave Knapp in his paint and glass shop;
Mike Aquaviva the Barber; Frank Dondero, taken in his nursing home not
long before he past away; and Jasper
Shupe, at his desk at the
Beacon Savings Bank, all of these photographs portray people who
made this town what it was. It was with this spirit in mind that I came
up with the idea of gathering a group of photographers to spend a week
photographing Beacon. When I first had a meeting at Chthonic Cafe to
discuss this possibility; I would have been happy to have five or six
photographers show up. To my surprise, we had over twenty. These
photographers are represented here. They are amateurs, professionals,
businessmen and women, students, teachers, young and old. The one thing
they all share is a love of photography. Their images show Beacon during one
week in May, 2005. I hope that those viewing these photographs get a
sense of Beacon, its people, the community and its history.
