EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ADVISORY
August 23, 2011
Mayor Gold, the City Council, City Administrator Robson and the City’s emergency management personnel are well aware of the earthquake that hit Virginia earlier this afternoon. At 1:51 pm, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake rocked the central Virginia area. The location of the earthquake was centered at: 37.975°N, 77.969°W, approximately 27 miles East of Charlottesville, Virginia. While there were isolated calls regarding shaking experienced in the City, there are no reports of damage and no emergency situations within the City of Beacon resulting from this earthquake. City of Beacon Emergency Personnel are on notice and prepared to take action, if necessary.

The City of Beacon has been experiencing an increase in car larcenies recently throughout the City, with the highest concentration being on the south side of the City. Residents can help reduce and prevent crimes of opportunity by locking their vehicles whenever the vehicle is unattended, and to keep valuable items such as GPS systems, currency, and electronics out of sight.

The Nutrition Advisory Committee of Dutchess County and Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County are collaborating to provide free meals to kids and teens under 18 each weekday this summer, from July 5 to August 26.
In addition, they are joining the Poughkeepsie City School District Food Service in providing a Community Outreach Event in Beacon with free food, games and prizes.

The City Council has passed a new ordinance that limits the type and number of particular vehicles that can be parked in a driveway, including ATVs, snowmobiles, waterjets and utility trailers. It also regulates items on front and side yards such as outdoor furniture, car parts, fixtures and more.
