Informal meetings with the Assessor’s Office regarding assement questions or next year’s tax roll can take place throughout the year. The Board of Assessment Review meets once a year to hear residents' challenges to tax assessments.
The board is comprised of five members serving staggered five-year terms. Members are appointed by the mayor with the approval of the city council. Members are required to receive training by NYS Real Property Services at least once during each term.
The board meets on the fourth Wednesday of May each year to review and determine all EA-524 complaints on assessment reviewed prior to or on the fourth Wednesday in May. The board then notifies all complainants of the board's decision. The assessor is required by law to attend all Board meetings except the meeting at which the board makes their decisions. The assessor is barred from that meeting.
