William Bernard Wilson
was the first American soldier from Beacon, to lose his life.
The V.F.W in Beacon was so named to honor him.
He resided at 138 Old Road, Beacon with his parents. William enlisted in Co. L of Newburgh three years before he went overseas in May 8th 1918. He was 24 years old. William met his death in the service of his country on August 19, 1918 on the field of battle and lies buried on English soil. The Evening Journal, Beacon NY on June 14, 1919 wrote, "He was a member of the Maze Hook and Ladder Company and other organizations, where he was always popular and well liked, and has in Beacon many scores of friends who will always morn the loss and keep green the memorial of this Beacon hero and martyr for his country's cause."
