The Evening Journal, Saturday June 14, 1919.... "In the death of Thomas B. Carroll, the whole city received a shock. And to those of his immediate family it was a crushing blow. Carroll was twenty-three years old. He enlisted in Co. L of Newburgh three years before he left for overseas on May 8, 1918 During the many campaigns in which the gallant 27th Division took part, Carroll was always in the thickest of the fighting. He was severely wounded and was decorated for conspicuous bravery in action. He survived his wounds until after he returned to America on February 15 of this year, but succumbed in a hospital in New York on February 27th 1919. While his death was a cruel blow to his family and friends, they had the satisfaction of seeing him once more and laying him away on his native soil, and the rights of his parish church. He was buried from St. John's Church, Beacon with full military honors. In Thomas B.Carroll, Beacon recognizes and honors a heroic son, who by his gallantry and by his character, has earned a high place in the annals of this his native city. |
