Herman Gordon Deicke

The Evening Journal, Beacon, Saturday June 14, 1919....
"In the Argonne Forest, where so many intrepid American lads laid down their lives in stemming the advance of the Huns, Gordon Deicke made the supreme sacrifice.

The story of the heroic manner in which he died has been told by his comrades who have returned.  It is a story calculated to make every citizen of Beacon proud of Gordon Deicke, and to preserve his memory always, as one of this most gallant sons.

He was a member of the Headquarters Company of the 305th Infantry.  In the terrific fighting in the Argonne Forest, the captain of Deicke's company called for volunteers to go out in No Man's Land to bring in a wounded soldier. Every man knew that it was a mission whose almost certain end was death.  Yet many volunteered, and of those Gordon Deicke was one.  He, with two other men, was chosen.

A German shell burst right in the midst of the little group.  The wounded man was killed instantly.  All three of the rescue party were seriously wounded, Gordon Deicke mortally.

He died shortly after of his wounds.  He was a true hero who gave his life, willingly, to save the life of a comrade.

May he rest in peace."
