The Evening Journal, Saturday June 14, 1919.... "Here is another boy who responded to the call of his country when the United States entered this war of humanity. He enlisted in Co. E. National Guard, and was for a time with his company at the waterworks at New Paltz. Later on, when the Newburgh contingent left for Van Cortland Park Mr. Deveson was among them. He accompanied the 27th Division across the water and on that eventful day, September 29th, 1918 when America's sons, fighting with the seal of crusaders, swept everything before them, he laid down his life for the cause of humanity. 'Killed in Action' was what the Government reports said. George Deveson will always be remembered as a Beacon boy who died heroically for his country." |
