Safety Tips for Walking and Bike Riding

Safe Walking Tips

  1. Cross at crosswalks. Keep to the right on the crosswalk.
  2. Before crossing - look all ways.
  3. At signalized crosswalks, cross only on proper signal.
  4. Watch for cars. Be sure that the way is clear before you cross.
  5. Avoid crossing between parked cars.
  6. Where there is no sidewalk and it is necessary to walk in the roadway, walk on the left side, facing traffic.
  7. Wear or carry retro-reflective materials at night to help drivers see you.

Safe Bicycling Tips

  1. Wear a helmet every time you ride a bike.  Make sure that it is worn correctly and is ANSI or SNELL approved.
  2. Stop at intersections; walk bike across busy intersections and streets.
  3. Drive on right with traffic.
  4. Obey traffic signs, signals and pavement markings. Stop at stop signs.
  5. Stop and be sure roadway is clear before entering from a sidewalk or driveway. 
  6. Use proper hand signal for turning or stopping.
  7. Avoid driving at night.
  8. Give the right-of-way to pedestrians.
  9. Pay very careful attention to what is happening around you. Watch out for opening car doors.
  10. Do everything that you can to make certain that you are seen by motorists. For example, wear light or bright clothing, install safety flags, reflectors and or lights on your bike. 
  11. Use bike paths and lightly traveled streets when you can. 
  12. Keep bike in good repair.
