"Officer Charles Lucy met his death this morning
at eleven o'clock when a demented man named Wellington White, about 30
years old, discharged a shot gun at the officer when he entered the
man's home on North street...
When Officer Lucy and (fellow officer) Judge
entered the house, which is a somber looking affair, with drawn blinds,
Lucy was shot without warning just as he had reached the steps at the
top of the stairway to the upper floor. Both barrels were fired by White
at Officer Lucy's head. Judge a few steps behind Offer Lucy escaped with
his life only, due to the fact that a second gun grabbled up by the
White failed to explode. As soon as White had appeared at the head of the
stairs Officer Lucy had made a motion to draw his gun but his hand never
reached his hip pocket. He fell back dead into his brother officers
arms.
Officer Judge with the dying man in his arms
made an excellent target for White, but before he could get a third gun
the officer with one hand holding up Officer Lucy used the other to get
his gun. He fired one shot at White. Having no balance gave an uncertain
aim and White escaped into a room adjoining the hallway."
After a long gun battle with the house
surrounded, White was finally shot and later died.
A funeral service was held for Officer
Charles Lucy on August 18, 1922
